We Are Expecting...

 Yesterday Con and I went
To the DC farmers Co Op
Isn't this water feature cool?
We decided this year was the year to start our Farm family.
So we went to order SIX Chickens to arrive hopefully around the 20th of this month.
YEP I am FINALLY, after all these years of wanting Chickens, going to get my own.
We only wanted four but they said to get more in case. I dont like that IN CASE.
So we ordered;
2 Plymouth Bard Rocks
2 Rhode Island Reds
1 Red Sex link
1 Black Australorp.
I wanted a variety so I can tell them apart.
We were told they were all good egg layers and hardy big chickens
and make good pets as they are not flighty.
So we are expecting Six little fluff balls soon.
I am excited and scared at the same time as they will need some careful care for a while.
I see a new journal coming up on the raising of our own feathered Critters..
:)
Also someone else had been expecting and had her little one a few days ago.
This little tyke was only 2 days old. Unfortunately she had twins and we had to call the Sheep guy to come get it as it came out and broke its leg and mama abandoned it. He said he was going to see if he could save it but we probably wont know. At least this little one made it.
 About three days old here.
So little yet she/he was frolicking by her mama
So white too, for now, since there is nothing but mud around there.
As soon as I got these shots Mama took her to the other side of the tall weeds for cover.

Jill's Chickens and Ducks  wandered over on our side of the street looking for new bugs so Annie and I shooed them home.
I just love to watch those little butts run, they are sooo cuuute.
How can I not want any?
Annie is getting in practice
OK Mom they are on their way back to where they belong.
Did I do good??
Do I get a Cookie now?
And this is our new motto.
Farmer Con and Cris
Expecting soon!
:))

  1. Congratulations on the new baby...so sad about it's twin though. I hope it makes it but it doesn't sound good as it's crucial for them to have their mother's milk in the first week at least.

Congrats on the ordered additions to the family too. Chickens are often known as 'chooks' in Australia...more-so from my generation and before.

    Have a lovely week! :)

  4. yes, congratulations, I cannot think of a better home than yours for those girls! Oh my gosh I love sheep, I always have and always will, it was my job to feed the chickens for a very long time and I will be honest the thrill left me but I love to see someone so excitd about them. They do each have their on personality, we always had about twenty, but each one was an individual, fresh eggs are the best, I'm not surprised they saif if something happens, chickens although once settled are a little scittish and can be quite delicate, I always found they are either tough or not and I don't mean tough in chewy tough!Oh no, I could never eat my chickens, just their eggs,

  5. Sounds like you are going to be making a lot of cakes then Cris! lol. We had a chicken years ago, it had been attacked by a bird when a chick, and a friend offered it to us. We had good eggs, but at that time I didn't know you should put a little oil in the feed to keep it from becoming what is called 'egg bound' and consequently that is just what happened.

  10. Thank you everyone. I am so excited about the chickens. I will take any advice on how to raise them I can get. We are thinking of taking a class on raising new chickens in March. Robin, No word on the other lamb. Not sure I will ever find out, But at least it wasn't left to suffer.
